Put All Your Eggs in One Bin

Before I moved into this house, I had what I called a “Euro Fridge” which is a gussied up way of saying it was SMALL. I don’t even have a huge fridge here, but compared to what I had before, it’s enormous. Now that I have all this space, I’ve been on a mission to find the best way to organize my fridge.

My top two organizing tips, just generally, as a person who LOVES to organize: 1) Do what works for YOU. There is no “right” way, and 2) Know that whatever system you come up with, you can (and probably will) change it. I have reorganized my kitchen multiple times, and I’ve lived here less than three years. But what you need and value will change, and you should change your environment to suit YOU.

I’ve made two big changes to my fridge setup that I’m thrilled about (I got thrilled about this kind of thing even before I was quarantined at home for a year, I am what I am) and the first one I want to share is about EGGS.

I get eggs from Costco, so I get two dozen at a time, and I would keep them in the carton they came in on the top shelf of my fridge. It was a pain to pick up that big box to take out one or two eggs, but I figured that was the price I had to pay.

Normally I would admire taking something simple and complicating it in the name of aesthetics but this is TOO MUCH.

I did explore different options, like those plastic egg containers they have at Home Goods or The Container Store, but they hold really weird numbers of eggs. 14 eggs. 15 eggs. 21 eggs. I understand that they want you to be able to refill it with a dozen while you still have some, but it just made me mad. Plus, my issue was the carton, and wouldn’t this just be another carton? Then I remembered the week I had eggs in a bowl.

One time I got a carton that had cracked eggs, but they were cracked on the bottom, so i didn’t know. I went to take an egg out one day and it was STUCK to the carton and long story only slightly shorter, I ended up having to put all the uncracked eggs in a bowl and toss the carton. That week I had eggs in a bowl? HEAVEN. I could grab eggs with only one hand! Sure, I saved mere seconds by not having to take the carton out, open it, get eggs, close it, and put it back. But those were precious seconds! But even though I had this fantastic experience, I didn’t think it was reasonable to just keep your eggs in a bowl. They COME in a carton. Even if you get a plastic or ceramic egg containers, it’s still carton shaped! You can’t just keep EGGS in a BOWL.

Yes, I have two jars of spare pickles. Be jealous!

But you can. No one is going to stop you, and eggs aren’t that fragile. I wouldn’t put them in the door bin, where they’d get jostled every time you open or close the fridge, but a bin or bowl on a shelf? Absolutely. I got this bin from Bed, Bath, and Beyond, because coupons, but you can use anything. You can even use a bowl, like I did for awhile, but it takes up a lot more room than a narrow bin, plus then you’re down one bowl.

I have about 27ish eggs in the bin in the above photo. When I got the bin, I didn’t think it would hold a full two dozen eggs, plus whatever I had left in the carton before my restock, but they fit perfectly. I am not a total madwoman, so I placed each few eggs carefully by hand, but then I got the below TikTok video in my FYP and I feel like she’s practically tossing them (the video is sped up and i’m being hyperbolic but still). Eggs are resilient!
