Oreo Molds Are The Perfect Solution for Freezing Individual Portions of Sauces and Dips

I recently started making my own hummus (after Trader Joe’s rudely discontinued my beloved Tomato Basil Hummus) and I have two big takeaways: First of all, it IS easy to make your own hummus (not like when you see a TikTok for an “easy, lazy meal” and it starts with caramelizing onions), and second, I cannot eat enough hummus to make a whole batch AND eat it in time for me to no longer worry how long it’s been in my fridge.

I knew about Souper Cubes, and they seemed like a great way to freeze my extra hummus or curried peanut dip and have them take up less room in the freezer, so I bought the Target knockoffs. They did work, but it wasn’t ideal. I didn’t know what WAS ideal… until I learned about Oreo molds.

So apparently this is a whole thing? You make like, little chocolate covered Oreos and decorate them and to do so you need these molds? If you search “Oreo Molds” a whole world opens up to you. But, apart from elaborate dessert creations, the Oreo molds are perfect for making little pucks of sauces or dips that you can defrost for a small serving of whatever. Need more? Use two! Because of their small size, these frozen cubes not only store much easier, but also defrost much easier. I’d have to put my big cube of hummus into a too-large container for defrosting, and now I have this huge container with 3/4 cup of hummus in it, taking up all my fridge space.

I recommend putting your molds on a sheet pan or other solid surface while they freeze, especially more liquid-y things. Two of these molds fit perfectly on a 1/4 sheet pan, FYI

The small size also helps them freeze faster, so you don’t have a delicate tray of loose liquid hanging around in your freezer waiting for you to make one wrong move and change your plans to “cleaning the entire freezer.” Once the molds are frozen, they’re easy to pop out of the silicone trays and put in a plastic bag, which is easy to fit somewhere — even my packed freezer.

The frozen pucks are so easy to get out of the silicone molds, this one fell out while I was trying to take a photo.

I’m going to be making little frozen pucks of hummus, dips, sauces… and not only will I always have some at hand, I won’t be wasting my time and ingredients making too much of something I’ll never get through. I wish I had known to search for Oreo molds sooner, these things are GREAT.

Two pucks of curried peanut dip fit perfectly in a 1.3 cup Rubbermaid Brilliance container, ready to be thawed in the fridge. (Quality control provided by Foster Dog Chula, who clearly wanted to be included)
