The ZenGrip is the Switch Accessory of Any Arthritic Gamer’s Dreams
Please know, I am a gamer. I started saying this the day I got my Nintendo Switch, which was like, 15 days ago. This is my first video game system ever (I was a PC game kid - Myst, The Sims, the underappreciated Amazon Trail), and it’s fun! Everyone knew this already, but I’m just joining in now and I’m happy to be here.
An entertaining aside: When I was a nanny the eldest kid had a Nintendo DS. I, not yet being a gamer, always called it a Game Boy, and because of this was absolutely roasted by an 8 year old on a regular basis.
I bought the Switch mainly because I’m about to be sitting in the hospital for four hours at a time, and if I have to deal with that I deserve a new toy to keep me entertained. But now that I have the Switch, I play it all the time! Which is not great for my arthritic hands (the same hands that are why I have to be in the hospital on an IV for four hours!). I needed some kind of ergonomic holder thingy, and a search for “Switch holder arthritis” came up with practically nothing. I soon learned you need to search for, “Switch grip large man hands very strong tough man huge guy no really” and THEN you will get chunky grips that will feel better on your hands. And that’s gaming, baybee!
There are a LOT of options (once you know what to look for) and I decided to get a Satisfye ZenGrip Pro, based on reviews and what seemed like it would work for me. I didn’t have any issues with the Switch controllers themselves, just that the whole thing was hard to hold for any length of time, so I liked that the ZenGrip Pro just slid onto my Switch as-is and gave me a more comfortable grip to hold onto. The ZenGrip Pro manages to be super secure, but also easy to put on and remove. It’s lined with silicone grippy things that hold your Switch in place without scratching or damaging it, and while you do have to take the grip off to dock your switch, you can keep the grip on if you’re just charging from a USB-C cord.
I haven’t actually taken my Switch in its new outfit to the hospital yet, so I haven’t had to deal with portability. Satisfye sells a case made to fit a Switch with the ZenGrip Pro attached, but I just have a regular ol’ Switch case, so I think I’ll have to put the ZenGrip in a side pocket of my bag or something. We’ll see how that goes, I may be in the market for the fancy case as well. The ZenGrip Pro is exactly what I needed to keep my hands from hurting during a gaming sesh, and I would recommend it to anyone with arthritis or, of course, a big large man with huge tough hands.
