Wear, Watch, Want #181: The Textured Smelly Seance Edition

Wear: Tide Odor Rescue Pods

I am a sweaty person, especially if I’m exercising. Plus, now that I’m exercising at home and not going anywhere, I basically just put on workout clothes in the morning, exercise sometime during the day, then shower and change into pajamas. What I’m saying is, my laundry is almost entirely sweaty workout clothes. They’re not always stinky (I do my best to air dry before adding to a hamper, and spot treating super stinky stuff), but they do occasionally need a little extra oomph in the wash. I picked up these Tide Odor Rescue Pods on a whim, and I LOVE them. I got them to de-funkify my workout clothes, but I also toss one in when I wash Hero’s beds. It give a faint scent that smells like CLEAN. You toss a pod into the wash basin, add detergent, and let it ride. I have read some reviews that say the pod doesn’t fully dissolve, and I’ve never had that issue but I also only use these when I have a big load, and I either up the soil level or add a rinse cycle.

Watch: Host

I had heard a lot of hype about Host, the horror movie filmed during quarantine and entirely on Zoom, but I only recently watched it, and I have to say, I agree! It’s good! If you’re really into a specific kind of horror, or if you like being a buzzkill, this may not be your thing, but I not only thought the movie was entertaining, I thought it was interesting. What I really want is a making-of documentary on Host. I’ve spent so much time since I watched it trying to find out all the details of how they made it, and nothing is in-depth enough for me.

So the basic gist is that a group of friends have weekly Zoom hangouts, because of Covid, and they decide to have a Zoom seance for one of them. Because this is a horror movie, things go awry, and our characters are increasingly terrorized by a malevolent spirit. The movie is under an hour, because they use the free Zoom limit of one hour sessions as a framing device. Smart!! They also incorporate things like being on mute, internet connection issues, filters, all those things that are now a part of our daily lives. And it’s real Zoom too! (Would love a 30 minute chunk of that imaginary making-of doc about getting permission from Zoom.)

All the actors got special effects training (over Zoom) and did all the effects themselves. As well as costuming, makeup, lighting, it was all done remotely. They learned how to use fishing line to make things move in the background! I want to see that! I want to see it all!

Host is available exclusively on Shudder, which offers a free 7 day trial, but I got a year subscription for $45 because I wanted to watch some other stuff and really, what else am I doing? I’ll tell you: Googling interviews with the cast and crew of Host and waiting for my in-depth making-of doc that may or may not ever exist!

Want: Elation Rib Tight

My favorite casual, low-impact workout leggings are Athleta’s Ultra High Rise Elation Tights. When I found out they have a ribbed version, I was immediately sold. This is something I never thought I would think, but I genuinely thought, “Oh, dressier leggings!” Basically I think they would look a little less like workout clothes. They’re back ordered, but I have an order in for both the regular and tall versions, and in a few months I”ll know if they live up to my dreams of them.
