Wear, Watch, Want #178: The Double Dipped Children's Yoga Edition

Wear: Hair Accessories for Children

My hair is getting SO long. I don’t remember the last time I had a haircut, but it was at least a year ago, and who knows how long it will be before my next professional intervention. I have a lot of hair, but the actual hairs themselves are thin. See, I went through a medically induced menopause at 19 and all I got out of it was thinned hair. It was supposed to help my health but it did NOT and I had to have three surgeries anyway and now my hair is THIN! Is this malpractice?!?! Anyway, the point is, now I have super long hair but also it’s thin and most hair accessories just… don’t work right. Hair clips are either too big or too small. Scrunchies are regaining popularity, but they’re so big they make my hair look even thinner. I need this hair out of my WAY but all the tools are just not for me. So I went to the kids’ section of Target and got hair do-dads for sparkle-obsessed children. I got two sets of hair thingies:

The one on the left is this set of two scrunchies. I got it on clearance for $3, which is nice because I threw that pink one in the trash immediately. I was solely in it for the silky leopard one. I also got this set of two scrunchies and two hair clips, which has been getting a lot of use. The scrunchies are the perfect size for me to wrap around my hair twice. With “adult” size hair ties I end up having to wrap them around so many times it just makes my hair look super sparse, or I go loose and it falls out. I wore a topknot the other day that was the best looking one I’ve had in YEARS. The clips are also perfect for putting my hair in a high ponytail, wrapping the pony around to create a bun, and clipping to secure. Again, clips are either too large and dwarf my little bun, or are too small and it all falls out. It’s a whole new world for me and this hair on my head, and I cannot recommend the children’s hair aisle enough.

Watch: Into the Night and If I Hadn’t Met You

This week it’s a two for one in the Watch Department! Into the Night is a Belgian sci-fi show about a red-eye flight that gets hijacked. There aren’t many passengers, because the plane had only just begun boarding, and the hijacker insists that they keep flying “into the night” because something is spreading across the globe that causes everyone to die when the sun comes up. We learn more about the passengers as each episode progresses, but we don’t learn really anything about the mass extinction event caused by the sun. This lack of knowledge is one of the many things this show does that is just SO SMART. They find ways for the scenery to change, whether by having the plane land to refuel and the passengers to look for information or supplies, or by having them turn the luggage compartment into a brig. Because there are criminals on the plane! And people keeping secrets! And a sick kid that was on his way to get life-saving surgery! And an influencer! Into the Night is getting a second season, which is great because the season ends with a little bit of relief and a little bit of a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to see how it all plays out. Also the heroes at the end are Polish, YOU’RE WELCOME.

You’re interested in a foreign Netflix show that takes a different spin on sci-fi? I suggest If I Hadn’t Met You, a Spanish (but in Catalan) show that has serious KDrama vibes (you will hear the same song… four thousand times). It’s a limited series, so 10 episodes and it’s wrapped up, and it’s all about alternate universes and what could be/have been/be inescapable. Eduard lives in Madrid with is wife and two kids, and one morning he sends them off to work and school and all three die in a car accident. Eduard is grief stricken, and considering suicide, when he’s met my a mysterious woman named Dr Everest, who introduces him to her invention that allows a person to travel to alternate universes. Eduard becomes committed to finding a universe where he and his family live happily ever after. He tries going back in time to stop himself and his wife from falling in love, he goes to a universe where he marries someone else, but it never works out as planned. Dr Everest’s role is very obvious, but in a way that makes the final episode reveal less shocking twist and more like “Oh good, now I can see this story play out.” The adult actors play themselves in all the alternate universes, including their younger selves, which works to varying degrees. The way they style Elisa (Eduard’s wife) is incredible. She looks 20, and 40, and like she’s lived various lives in each different universe. Eduard as a young man looks older than his older self and it’s ridiculous every time. If you want a love story with a side of sci-fi, that fully wraps up in 10 episodes, this is the show for you.

Want: Giant Yoga Mat

Remember those three surgeries mentioned above? Well they destroyed my core muscles and I’ve been trying to regain core strength ever since. It’s been hard, because my core is SO weak that doing core exercises is virtually impossible. But I decided to try doing a 5-10 minute core workout every day (Peloton does it again!), and by starting with HUGE modifications, I can now do most workouts with minor (and sometimes zero) modifications. It took me two months just to get to this point, but it’s working! I have been using this yoga mat, and it’s passable but not great. It gets slippery fairly easily, and it’s kind of small. I decided that I should reward my good work and make things more comfortable by getting a fancy yoga mat. After a lot of research, I decided on a 5mm Lululemon one, and after more research (including taping out the sizes of the two Lululemon mats compared to my Target one), I decided on the Big Mat.

Another day, another weird experiment that confuses the dog.

Full disclosure, between starting this post and publishing, I bought the Big Mat, and it’s SO NICE. Embarrassing how I’m continually shocked by buying something more expensive and better reviewed and finding it’s considerably better than what I had. I can do lunges, planks, and whatever else is required of my workout and stay on the mat! And it just gets grippier the more you sweat! And it’s softer and more supportive! I love it.
