Wear, Watch, Want #147: The Dead Ballet Barre Edition
Wear: Grippy Socks
One day the floor at barre class was kind of slippery. Not like, in a gross way, just… a little slippery. I was having a hard time holding poses, and after that class I went home and ordered this two pack of grippy socks. And then wore them to one class and never again. It was a fluke with the floor, and I never needed them again. Ok. So cut to now, I’m doing barre and strength and HIIT classes at home, and my mats are hella slippery. And I’m trying all kinds of things, nothing is really working. Then, during an at-home barre class when I was trying to put two hand towels under my feet, I remembered those socks I bought and used one time and then immediately forgot about. Now I wear them anytime I’m on an exercise mat, and I may need some more. I’m considering these because while they look like it would take awhile to put on properly (so many straps) they are cute and I think they’d give me some real Center Stage vibes.
Watch: Dead to Me
I watched the first season of Dead to Me just a few months ago, so when season two was released recently I was all ready to jump back in. I didn’t even really need to depend on the synopsis Netflix puts at the front of the new season (I LOVE and DEPEND on this and would love if they did it for… everything). Season two is, I think, better than the first season, but it’s only so great becasue it takes the groundwork of the first and builds on it in new and surprising ways. I don’t know if this is intentional (I’m sure it is, but I don’t know), but just about each 30 minute episode of Dead to Me ends with a cliffhanger, so you’re always eager to just keep watching. If you’re in quarantine and have nothing else to do, you could probably watch two seasons in a day.
I like so much about the show, but far and away the best part is Linda Cardellini. She’s so sweet and perfect and I want everything her character wears and I HAVE looked up multiple pieces and attempted to find the costume designer on social media. Watch Dead to Me because it’s fun and entertaining and highly binge-able, but LOVE Dead to Me because Linda Cardellini is just perfect in it.
Want: A Dining Chair
Back to barre classes at home. Whether I’m taking a class through the studio’s professional online classes, or a Zoom class with the instructors I know and love, they will frequently throw out “use a waist high surface” which generally means a chair. This has alerted me to the fact that I do not have one single dining chair in my home. I have armchairs that are a pain in the ass to move around (and maybe wouldn’t work that well as a ballet barre replacement). I have a nook in the corner of my kitchen, so no dining chairs there. I have ONE chair, that goes with my desk, which perfectly usable but it is kind of a child’s chair and is decidedly NOT waist high. So I’ve been shopping for dining chairs, solely to use for like, three or four hours a week. and I won’t even sit in it. My parents I believe have so many oak dining chairs that they have them scattered around the house, and I’m going to see if they’ll lend me one. I’m not super keen on buying a chair solely to be used as a ballet barre. Although, there are some cute chairs out there.
