Wear, Watch, Want #116: The Gathered Wealthy Doormat Edition
Wear: North Face Gathered Ball Cap
I wear a hat when I walk the dog, because the sun is a demon that is trying to steal my beauty, and for years I was wearing one I bought at Target for $5. I bought it when I was on Accutane, partly to protect myself from the sun, and partly because my skin was a horror show and I was trying to hide. This black baseball cap from Target got a TON of use - my cost per wear was probably a fraction of a cent - but it had some drawbacks. Mainly, it was really dirty, and I was afraid to wash it because it was so cheap, I wasn’t sure it would survive even the most gentle cleaning. And so, seven years after purchasing an emergency hat, I replaced it with a significant upgrade. The North Face Gathered Ball Cap is super lightweight, made of breathable material, easy to adjust via a bungee-type cord on the back, and will stand up to lots of wear and, in the future, lots of washings.
Watch: Billions
I started watching Billions, and let me be clear, it’s because of Nicole Cliffe. She talks about Billions A LOT on twitter, and recapped seasons 3 and 4 for Vulture. Billions, a show about an ultra-wealthy hedge fund manager and the SDNY attorney who’s trying to take him down, is not at first glance a show I would be very interested in. BUT! Each season I get more and more invested (pun INTENDED). I’m on season 3 now, and after each episode I pull up Nicole Cliffe’s recap of that episode and read it. I’d recommend viewing this way, it’s a well-rounded experience.
Billions, in a first glance, shallow way, is about two very powerful men who want to destroy each other. BUT if you are really paying attention, the men on this show are CHUMPS, and it is the women and non-binary people who have all the power. Speaking of, Billions has the first non binary character to ever be on a mainstream TV show. Asia Kate Dillon plays Taylor and they are so perfect - WOULD die for them, my only wish is for every single one of Taylor’s dreams to come true.
Also, apparently Billions is a food show? With extremely minimal effort I found not one, not two, but THREE articles about the role food plays on Billions. Forget New York City being a character, in this modern era FOOD is a character.
So if you’re like me and don’t have any money or know anything about money, Billions is still a great show that will appeal to your particular interests: Marginalized gender identities and food.
Want: Doormat
I mean, what more is there to say? I need a new doormat. I have needed a new one for a considerable amount of time. Who knew choosing a damn doormat would be so challenging??? I like this one and this one from Target, but they’re SO affordable that I feel like they must be crap. But who among us can justify spending a considerable amount on something you wipe your feet on. Again, I have made something simple infinitely more complicated and at this point who knows when I’ll pull it together and make my stoop look presentable.
