Finally, a Natural Deodorant That Works as Advertised
I have been conducting an ongoing deodorant experiment. I thought I found my perfect solution, and even wrote a post praising it (I have since archived it), but it melted. Literally, I had to scrape goopy deo off the stick, and my own armpits after every application. But I really wanted this to work, so I kept trying to use it, and finally one morning I had my deodorant come to Jesus moment and I said, “ENOUGH.” I contacted customer service about a return, they were NOT helpful, and it’s still being resolved.
A quick interlude while I complain about clothing and beauty startups. Yes, this IS like when you want to read a recipe and instead the writer wants to tell you about their kid’s school play for some reason.
There’s this new trend of start up companies being SURE their product is the perfect solution for you. They’re so sure that you can return anything you’re not happy with, for free! BUT, when you try to return, they make it so obnoxious because, again, they are CERTAIN they have made the perfect product. Maybe they have! But sometimes you just change your mind! Or need that $40 to pay a surprise bill, or WHATEVER. But if you try to return something they need to know WHY and give you options like “too big” or “loose straps” and then instead of just saying, “Yes, ok, here’s a packing slip” they then lead you to an explanation of how you can FIX that problem and just do an exchange! I just did this with some bras and THE ONLY WAY I could return was to select “other” and then write, “I ordered more than I wanted and was planning on sending some things back. I wanted to try different stuff. This form is obnoxious.” ALSO (yes, I’m still going) the deodorant that I returned, which claims that you can return for free, for any reason, at any time, has NO system set up to place a return. I had to go to their contact page and email customer service, and then they told me I had a defective product (I think their product just didn’t work for me but FINE) and then told me a story so convoluted that I only got a return slip after a second email where I basically said, “Truly WTF is happening.” I WISH THEM LOVE AND LIGHT AND A BETTER BUSINESS PLAN.
If you read all that, may God bless you and keep you. If not, well now I’m going to talk about the deodorant that I’m actually loving: Megababe Rosy Pits Daily Deodorant.
It smells lovely (but I love the smell of rose, which I know some people hate), and there’s also a citrus version, Sunny Pits (I think citrus smells like BO so it’s NOT what I’m looking for in deodorant). The product stays solid and doesn’t leave my pits looking like I’ve slathered them in paste. I’ve never had any marks on my clothes either. Now here’s the part that is very niche to what I’m dealing with, but maybe could help someone else: It has significantly helped my underarm discoloration.
This whole deodorant switcheroo came about because I switched antiperspirants and my armpits turned orange. ORANGE. I looked into causes and found that it could be because of… many things. I could not come up with a clear explanation, but I did discover that a fix is to switch to a natural deodorant, at least for awhile. My first attempt seemed good, but I still had darker underarms and, you know, a melty mess of deodorant on my hands. Megababe’s deo has vitamin E, which helps calm down irritated, sensitive skin, and after just a week I noticed my pits were starting to chill the hell out.
Another thing I found when searching for natural deodorants is that a LOT of them perpetuate the (incorrect) idea that aluminum is bad for you. Let me tell you: There is no evidence that aluminum in your antiperspirant is having negative effects on your health. Megababe doesn’t say this on their website, which I appreciate. They instead say that aluminum in antiperspirant plugs up your sweat glands, which is true. This, by the way, is also why it’s best to apply antiperspirant before bed, Because you’ll sweat just a teensy bit and that sweat mixes with the aluminum to create a sweat gland plug, and then you’re ready for a dry-pit day ahead. Megababe also sells an underarm mask, which, immediately attracted my attention because I LOVE a mask. The transition from antiperspirant to deodorant is notoriously difficult (I know, I’ve been living it) and this mask is made to ease that transition. Apparently it can also help with underarm discoloration! I’m definitely getting a tube, and will keep you posted.
